Zune vs iPod Movies
iPod may have the PR stunts and a modern-day P.T Barnum at the helm, but when it comes to mobile movies, there is one clear winner: Zune. iPod has Disney, and Zune has, well, lets take a look: Studios available for Zune include 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Lions Gate and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. Also waiting for download to hard drives for play on the soon-to-be-seen Zune are programs from this rather large collection of television networks:
A&E, Animal Planet, BBC, The Biography Channel, Cartoon Network, CBS, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Discovery Kids, E! Entertainment Television, Fine Living TV Network, Fox, Fuel TV, FX, HGTV, The History Channel, KBS (Korean Broadcast System), Logo, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, The N, PBS, Speed, Spike, Travel Channel, TV Land and VH1.

If these studios and TV networks do come through with content this fall, it should mean a huge boost for Zune. While iPod does have an impressive list of shows and movies available or coming soon, this list Microsoft has is truly impressive. Personally, I would never purchase one of these downloadable movies and shows, but there’s apparently a huge market for them.
I think companies will probably favor Microsoft if for no other reason than the fact that Microsoft seems to care more about working with its partners to make decisions. Apple, on the other hand, makes its own decisions and forces them on its partners no matter how much they disagree with the decisions. A great example of this is how much music companies and studios hate Apple’s flat-rate policy and tried to have Apple change its ways. Like always, though, Apple stood firm. Because at the moment the studios had no other choice but to agree, they did so. However, Zune and Microsoft’s service may be much more to their liking and give them a real choice.

I, for one, get tired of buying a movie for my DVD that they do not want to have me use for my pocket PC, my PSP and other devices, like Zune. If I buy the movie it should be mine for all formats. I stopped buying movies for the PSP because having to buy movies for just one format, that is not my main format, is a rip off by the music industry. The movie industry expects me to pay for the same movie 5 - 6 times, just because I have different players. It is like them telling me that I can only play the movie on one of my home DVD players. Since they enjoy trying to rip me off for something I have already paid for, when they have the anti-pirate commercial at the start of the DVD movie, I laugh. They are the rip off artists.
I would not buy movies for a Zune. I would expect to EASILY AND LEGALLY be able to view the DVDs I already own on the Zune or else I will write off the Zune’s ability to play movies.
Becasue of the attitude of Hollywood, I will not buy any DVD for over $10.00; I rent them. If I could play them on different devices and get free replacement DVDs for damaged DVDs my attitude would change.
Consumer groups should represent DVD buyers and buyers of pocket PCs, PSPs, Zunes, etc. I would send in $$$ for a class action law suit against the movie companies. The same is true for the record companies.
